A Message
from the Chair - Ham Radio University
2008
This year we will be
holding our ninth Ham Radio University event on Saturday, January
13, 2008. This year's HRU program will be nothing short of
spectacular.
What is HRU? Many of you have already heard of
Ham Radio University but the idea may be new to some of you. HRU was
created by Phil Lewis, N2MUN. Phil was searching for ways to get
inactive hams back into the swing of Amateur Radio. In addition,
Phil wanted to help newly licenced hams who ask "What Now?". Since
1999, HRU has been bringing the local ham community together for a
special day of learning and fellowship.
Gordon West, WB6NOA,
will be our keynotes speaker. He always has exciting things to offer
to newbies as well as old timers. I have had the opportunity to hear
Gordon speak on a number of occasions. On each occasion I have
learned something new and have walked away with a new sense of
optimism for the future of Amateur Radio.
Speaking of the
future of Amateur Radio, we will be treated to a demonstration of
D-STAR, a cutting edge technology developed by ICOM to bring
repeater communications into the 21st century through digital speech
technology.
What else do we have in store for 2008?
For our "Welcome to Amateur Radio" track, we plan to feature
a beginner's forum on setting up your first station as well as a
young ham forum aimed at "Elmers" who are looking for more effective
ways to get kids interested in ham radio.
A second track is
dedicated entirely to public service, emergency communications, and
public relations as well as a brand new forum dedicated to radio
clubs: "Join a Club, Join the Fun".
Our "How-To Workshop"
track will feature DF'ing and hidden transmitter hunting, portable
antenna construction, and VHF propagation.
For the
technically inclined ham, we have a "technical" track with an all
new forum on RF Interference as well as HRU's first forum dedicated
to power supply technology.
Finally, we have an "Operating"
track featuring HF Propagation, operating techniques and current
events for serious DXers, and contest operating at home and abroad.
And yes, there will be a VE session for those who want to
obtain their first "ticket" or to upgrade an existing license.
In short, there is something for everybody at Ham Radio
University. If you have not been to an HRU, I encourage you to
attend this year.
