A Message from the Chair - Ham Radio University 2010

This year we will be holding our eleventh Ham Radio University and New York City / Long Island Section Convention on Sunday, January 10, 2010. Ham Radio University will take place at Briarcliffe College on 1055 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, NY. Our sponsoring club in 2010 is the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club. HRU is made possible the collective efforts of more than twenty local Amateur Radio organizations as well as the American Radio Relay League.

What is HRU? Many of you have already heard of Ham Radio University but the idea may be new to some of you. HRU was created by Phil Lewis, N2MUN. Phil was searching for ways to get inactive hams back into the swing of Amateur Radio. In addition, Phil wanted to help newly licenced hams who ask "What Now?". Since 1999, HRU has been bringing the local ham community together for a special day of learning and fellowship.

Our theme for 2010 is Communications in the Digital Age. This year's keynote speaker will be Steve Ford, WB8IMY. Perhaps you've heard of him. Steve is QST Editor and Publications Manager of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio. He’s also Liaison to the Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) group for Digital Communication Conferences and author of the “Eclectic Technology” column in QST. He became a licensed amateur in 1971, and his interests in Amateur Radio include digital communications and satellites. Steve is the author of several ARRL books including HF Digital Handbook, ARRL Satellite Handbook and ARRL VHF Digital Handbook. He has also authored several of ARRL’s online courses.

Our 2009 keynotes speaker, ARRL Vice President Kay Craigie, gave us all a "homework assignment" to explore some new aspect of Amateur Radio. Our HRU 2010 lineup of forums provides the perfect opportinuty to continue pursuing new avenues of fun and excitement. One entire track is dedicated to RF topics including antennas, grounding, and RFI. Another track features an ARRL forum, public service, emergency communications, wireless history, and a new forum on information theory - a look under the hood of digital modes of radio communication. Our operating track will feature VHF propagation, HF DXing, Contesting, getting started in packet radio, and bringing the next generation of kids into the hobby. Our fourth track is dedicated ways you can take ham radio out of the basement and out into the field - hidden transmitter hunting, QRP (portable, low power operation), satellite operation, hints and kinks for mobile operators, and portable go-kits for hams on the move. Finally, in our great room, we will have a lineup of digital presentations including D-Star, Voice over IP, Digital TV, Home Weather Stations, and Scanners with a Digital Twist.

We will have a special event station, W2V, on the air with tradional modes as well as PSK-31. You're encouraged to check out the special event station and operate.

Refreshments aill be available in the college cafeteria, which will be transformed into an Eyeball QSO room with club tables from the various local and national organizations that support Ham Radio University.

In short, there is something for everybody at Ham Radio University. If you have not been to an HRU, I encourage you to attend this year.

- Neil, KC2KY
